"At least we made it here, someone please take a picture."
We considered going directly to Koh Samui in the south so that we didn't have to go near Bangkok, but the last flights had already taken off that day. Our only other option was a hotel near the airport. So with the help of one of the airport information booths, we were in a taxi to our hotel within 30 minutes after landing.
It was a decent hotel about 10 minutes from the airport. I guess I was a bit tired because I have zero pictures of our night there, but it was our first little taste of Thailand.
When we arrived we had dinner in the hotel restaurant and although the place looked a bit shabby, the curry was delicious! It made me really look forward to the the meals ahead. After dinner the hotel staff kindly offered us complementary Thai massages. When Davin heard the word "massage" I think I saw him shutter a bit, but when he saw that they were small Thai women that performed the massages he loosened up again. Different from the Taiwanese, they used their entire bodies to walk and crawl on our backs. They also stayed above the belt.
After reading about "what to watch out for as a tourist in Thailand", and after hearing all the horror stories about people getting ripped off, Davin and I tried to be careful as we made our way around. We were a bit uneasy when the hotel staff offered to book our flights to Koh Samui for the next morning, but Davin decided he trusted them enough and let them go ahead. After our massage they gave us our ticket information which said our flight was scheduled for 6:00am! Apparently all other flights were booked. Great. That meant we had to be up at 4:00am to make it on time. We asked for a wake-up call and went back to the room to try and get some sleep.
As we walked, we started getting paranoid thinking that they overcharged us for the tickets. I don't remember how was came to the next conclusion, but it was something about them selling us fake tickets and plotting to let us sleep in so we miss our flight and then lose our "deposit" which would actually go to the hotel...we were tired. Anyways, all this talk got us quite worked up and we decided to set our own alarms just in case the wake up call happened to malfunction.
At just passed 4:00 in the morning, Davin woke me up saying, "Shannon, Shannon, we have to get up." He had the television on and it said it was ten past four. I couldn't believe it. The hotel was trying to make us miss our flight!
Davin and I weren't going to be fooled so we got ready as quickly as possible and hurried down to the front where some of the hotel staff were lazing around. They looked surprised to see us, but taking our hurried cue, they grabbed our bags and threw them into the taxi van and off we went. "Phewph," we thought. "We made it."
Then, something didn't feel right. I looked at the time on the dashboard and it said 3:15am. Huh? Davin asked the driver if that was the correct time to which he replied, "yes." We laughed but didn't believe it and waited until we arrived at the airport to find out for sure. It was just after 3. We had mixed up the times and had left one hour early. Don't we feel silly. Our wake-up call was probably going off right now. The taxi we just took was waiting there for us, but they had been expecting us after four, which explains the surprised look we got when we came down.
Well, our paranoia completely backfired. Now we had 3 hours to kill at the airport when we could have had another hour of sleep. We made the best of it.
First we went to the flight desk to try and check-in, but it was still closed.
Then we went to Starbucks for a little pick-me-up. So early.
Next I tried to copy Tatjana by taking some artistic shots of the architecture.
"Shannon! Put the camera away"
I think we both slept on the hour flight to Koh Samui because it seemed like with the blink of an eye we were there.
